About Your Car Air Conditioning System

Air conditioning in a car can be a godsend, especially in hot climates, but it is important for drivers to keep their car air conditioning systems running at peak efficiency.

When air conditioning breaks down, the repairs can be quite expensive, so a small amount of routine maintenance makes good sense.

Run the Air Conditioning System Regularly

During the summer months you are likely to run your air conditioning system every day. But in the winter there may be long stretches of time where you do not need to use the air conditioning. Even when the weather is cool, it is a good idea to run your car air conditioning for at least a few minutes every week. Running the air conditioning on a regular basis will help to keep the system lubricated and all the parts running smoothly. For this reason, it is important to run the air conditioning at least once a week even in the winter months. Even when the weather is cold, you can run the air conditioning to clear the windscreen and at the same time you will be helping to preserve the system for hotter weather.

Check Your Coolant Levels

One of the most common causes of air conditioner problems is a lack of refrigerant. It is a good idea to check potential problem areas before this occurs. Each time Hankham Motors performs an oil change or other scheduled maintenance and servicing, ask us to check all fluid levels, including your air conditioning refrigerant. This regular maintenance is an ideal way to prevent all mechanical problems and not just problems with your air conditioning. These preventative car servicing measures can help to prevent a major repair bill.

Troubleshooting Your Air Conditioning System

When there is a problem with your air conditioning system you should ask Hankham Motor Works to investigate and diagnose the cause straight away. To help your us make the right diagnosis it is important to look at the symptoms and what could be causing them. If the air conditioning motor starts up but the air it is blowing is not cold, the most likely problem is low refrigerant or no refrigerant. If this is the case, a simple recharge of the air conditioning system should get that cold air flowing again. Air conditioning problems can also be caused by a lack of air flow. If the air conditioning is not producing enough cool air inside the car, it is a good idea to make sure the electric cooling fan motor is running properly. On some cars, there will be two fans - one is for the air conditioning and the other is the engine cooling fan which cools the car radiator. If your car has two fans, make sure that both of them are running properly. In this case, repairing the fan should restore your air conditioning system to working order.
